Silver Streak Boats has been building custom all welded aluminum boats in Anchorage, Alaska since 1976. The first boat built was a Cuddy Cabin Inboard model. It was an all welded aluminum boat built to handle the big open water yet able to run the rivers of our state. It was sold before it was finished and brought orders for more boats.
They started out in a garage and when the orders started comming in they moved to a shop on Arctic Blvd.
They started doing the boat show at the Sports Arena on Fireweed Lane. It was a big sucess and they went to work building boats.
The next model they built was an open boat with a windshield, they called it the Runabout. A smaller model that could be powered with an inboard or an outboard moter.
For the conveniance of their customers they sold a boat package that included the boat, motor and trailer.
Next was a smaller open boat powered with a small inboard they called the Grizzly. These boats were built for inventory and did not take long to sell and they got orders for more.
As the amount of boats being built grew the started doing boat repairs for their customers.
They started keeping an inventory of parts for their customers and ordered parts that were not in the inventory.
The boat show was moved to the Sullivan Arena and the Northway Mall. Silver Streak Boats were at both locations.
In 1992 the first Hardtop model was built and taken to the show at the Northway Mall. It sold shortly after the show.
One of our customers lost his boat in an accident and wanted a new boat, we built the first Cuddy Hardtop model. This boat was built to run the rivers and we later built ones for the ocean.
Another one of our customers wanted an ocean boat, so we built our first deep water boat. It was a big hit and we got orders for more .
All of our boats are built with top of the line materials, marine grade aluminum and stainless steel parts where needed. Each one of our boats is built to suit the needs of the costomer.
When our customers wanted boat tops we had them taken to a top shop in town. Not wanting to depend on anyone else to get the job done, in 1998 we decided to start building our own tops. Twelve years later we are proud to say our tops match the quality of our boats.
Since we had a top shop we decided to build boat seats and custom seating arrangment for boats.
Newer tools, materials and technology have changed the looks of the boats but the quality of our boats is our number one priority.
We do boat repair on all models of boats, are warranty station for some boat models and we work with insurance companys to get repairs done for our customers.
For the past 16 years we have been doing boat appraisals and surveys on aluminum boats and they are accepted at most banks, insurance companys and lots who sell boats.
Silver Streak Boats was started by Mel Jennings in late 1975 and later was joined by Ben Sherbahn. Ben bought the fifth boat Mel was building and before it was half done he was helping Mel build the boat. After his boat was done Ben went to work for Mel building boats.
Not able to keep up with building the boats and the office, they had Ben's father Ben Sr come to work in the office. They incorporated and called the business Alaska Aluminum Products Inc dba Silver Streak Boats.
When Ben's father retired the office was turned over to Ida, Ben's wife
When our son Ben Jr graduated, he went to work with his dad designing and building boats.
When our daughter graduated , she went to work with her dad building boat tops and seats.
Growing up in Kotzebue, we ventured into the Kotzebue Sound and the surrounding lakes and rivers to hunt, fish, commercial fish and pick berries. The best pike fishing ever!
After moving to Anchorage, we went to the Talkeeta River and Clear Creek to fish for kings and rainbow. Great king fishing!
We later headed for the Keani River and Skilak Lake to fish for reds, silvers, dollys and rainbow. We put in at the Sportsmans Lodge and headed down the Keani River in a 16 ft riverboat thru the rapids, fished along the way and ended up at Skilak Lake . There we fished for lake trout. What an awsome place to fish.
In search for kings, we crossed the Cook Inlet and went went to the Susitna River, Deshka River, and Alexander Creek. We also fished for silvers on Lake Creek and explored the Yetna area. Some tricky river running, really keeps you on your toes.
The search for halibut took us to the beautiful Prince William Sound, Anchor River, Deep Creek, Homer and Seward. Some interesting fish to catch and awesome sight seeing.
In Barrow we ventured out into Arctic Ocean, among the ice flows, to test boats we built. While we were out in a boat we had repowered, we observed some polar bears taking an afternoon swim. What an experiance!
The most fun part of building boats is testing our boats in different parts of our beautiful state.
The fact that we use our boats to hunt, fish and play helps us to better understand the needs of our customers. We keep this in mind when we build our boats.
Alaska has rugged conditions on land and water, so our boats are built to meet the needs of our customers.
While out boating remember to wear a life jacket and enjoy safe boating!
